Seeking Wisdom: How the Book of Proverbs Leads to Peace and a Prosperous Life

Proverbs says wisdom is more precious than rubies. Bishop Gary Oliver explains what wisdom really is, how to get it, and why it leads to peace and prosperity.

Family, we live in the information age. You can find an answer to almost anything in seconds. But information is not the same as wisdom. You can know a lot and still make foolish choices.

Solomon, the wisest king who ever lived, gave us a whole book about wisdom. And he said this:

"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." (Proverbs 4:7, KJV)

The principal thing. Not one thing among many. The first thing.

What Is Biblical Wisdom?

Knowledge is knowing the facts. Understanding is knowing why the facts matter. Wisdom is knowing what to do with them, God's way.

Proverbs 9:10 tells us where wisdom starts: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom." That fear is not terror. It is reverence. It means putting God in His rightful place, so that His Word becomes the lens through which we see every decision.

Wisdom and Prosperity

In our episode we talked about how seeking wisdom leads to prosperity. Now, let me be careful. Biblical prosperity is not just money. It is wholeness: peace in your mind, health in your relationships, provision for your needs, and purpose in your life.

Look at what Proverbs 3 promises to those who hold on to wisdom:

  • Long life and peace: "For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee" (Proverbs 3:2).
  • Favor: "So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man" (Proverbs 3:4).
  • Direction: "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Proverbs 3:6).
  • Health: "It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones" (Proverbs 3:8).
  • Provision: "So shall thy barns be filled with plenty" (Proverbs 3:10).

Dr. Noemi adds a helpful point from psychology: wise habits compound over time. Small daily choices in how you spend, speak, rest and relate add up to the life you will be living ten years from now.

How to Get Wisdom

1. Ask for it. "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally" (James 1:5). God is not stingy with wisdom.

2. Read a Proverb a day. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs. Read the chapter that matches today's date. In one month you will have read the whole book.

3. Walk with wise people. "He that walketh with wise men shall be wise" (Proverbs 13:20). Look at who is speaking into your life.

4. Slow down your decisions. "Every purpose is established by counsel" (Proverbs 20:18). Pray, seek counsel and give big decisions time.

5. Receive correction. "Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end" (Proverbs 19:20). The wise are teachable.

Choose the Principal Thing

Before you chase the next opportunity this week, seek wisdom first. Ask God for it, read His Word, and let it guide your steps. Wisdom will lead you into peace, and peace is true prosperity.
