The Heart of the Father: What the Prodigal Son Teaches About Healing Family Wounds
The prodigal son is really a story about a father. Bishop Gary Oliver shows how Luke 15 reveals God's heart and gives us a path to restore broken family relationships.
Family, most of us have heard the parable of the prodigal son so many times that we think we know it. A young man takes his inheritance, wastes it in a far country, ends up feeding pigs, and comes home. Case closed.
But I want to suggest something to you. This is not mainly a story about a son. It is a story about a Father. Jesus told it to reveal the heart of God.
"When He Was Yet a Great Way Off"
Luke 15:20 is one of the most beautiful verses in all of Scripture:
"But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him."
Think about that. The father saw him from far away. That means he was looking. Every day he had been watching the road. Then he ran. In that culture a man of standing did not run. He would have to lift his robe and expose his legs. The father set aside his dignity to reach his son before anyone else could shame him.
That is the heart of God toward you. Before you finish your speech, before you clean yourself up, He is running toward you.
Two Sons, Two Kinds of Distance
We often forget there were two sons. The younger son left the house. The older son never left, but his heart was far away. He said, "Lo, these many years do I serve thee" (Luke 15:29). He worked like a servant instead of living like a son.
Some of us are younger sons: we walked away and we are ashamed. Some of us are older sons: we are in church every Sunday, but we are resentful, tired and cold. The Father goes out to both. He runs to one and pleads with the other (Luke 15:28).
Where Theology Meets Family Life
Dr. Noemi reminds us in this episode that family wounds shape how we see God. If your earthly father was absent, harsh or unpredictable, it can be hard to picture a Father who runs toward you. Our experiences create expectations, and we often project them onto God.
Healing begins when we let the truth of Scripture rewrite those expectations. God is not the father who left. He is the Father who waited, watched and ran.
Four Steps Toward Restoration in Your Family
- Come to yourself. The turning point for the younger son was when "he came to himself" (Luke 15:17). Honest self-reflection is the beginning of every restoration.
- Lead with compassion, not a lecture. The father did not say "I told you so." He embraced first and talked later.
- Restore identity. The robe, the ring and the shoes (Luke 15:22) were signs of sonship. When someone comes back, help them remember who they are.
- Invite the older brother to the party. Resentment keeps us outside. Forgiveness lets us celebrate what God is doing.
Restoration does not mean ignoring real harm or skipping healthy boundaries. It means we choose the Father's heart as our model.
The Robe Is Waiting
Whether you are far away or angry at the door, hear me: the Father is still watching the road. It is not too late to come home, and it is not too late to open your arms to someone else.
Word activated, love motivated. That is the Father's heart, and it can be yours.
