Purpose & Calling
Which Season Are You In? A Spiritual and Psychological Guide to the Seasons of Life

There is a season for everything. Learn to recognize whether you're in a season of planting, growing, harvest or rest, and what God is asking of you right now.
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." (Ecclesiastes 3:1, KJV)
As the leaves change here in North Texas, we are reminded of a truth that runs all through Scripture: life moves in seasons. One of the most freeing things you can do is recognize which season you are in, because each season asks something different of you.
In our episode on the four seasons of life, we talked about this spiritually, psychologically and practically. Here is the heart of that conversation.
Season One: Winter, the Season of Waiting
Winter can feel like nothing is happening. Relationships feel quiet, doors seem closed, and prayers seem unanswered. But underground, roots are growing deep.
Spiritually, winter is where God builds your foundation. Think of Joseph in prison or David in the wilderness. Psychologically, winter often comes after loss or change. It is normal to feel tired, low or unsure. Practically: rest, reflect and stay rooted in the Word. Don't make permanent decisions based on a temporary season.
Season Two: Spring, the Season of Planting
Spring is new beginnings: a new job, a new ministry, a new relationship, a fresh start after a hard time.
Spiritually, spring is sowing season. "Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap" (Galatians 6:7). Psychologically, new beginnings bring both excitement and anxiety. Both are normal. Practically: plant intentionally. Set small goals and build healthy habits now.
Season Three: Summer, the Season of Growth
Summer is full of activity. Things are growing, and so are the demands on your time.
Spiritually, summer calls for faithfulness and endurance. "Let us not be weary in well doing" (Galatians 6:9). Psychologically, this is when burnout sneaks in. Watch your stress and sleep. Practically: protect your time with God and guard your margins. Growth without rest leads to breakdown.
Season Four: Fall, the Season of Harvest
Fall is when you see the fruit of what you planted. It is a time for gratitude and for sharing what you have been given.
Spiritually, harvest is a time to give thanks and to give back. Psychologically, celebrate your progress. Gratitude strengthens emotional well-being. Practically: take inventory. What worked? What needs pruning before the next season?
How to Discern Your Season
Ask yourself three questions:
- What is God emphasizing to me right now? Waiting, starting, persevering or celebrating?
- What is my energy telling me? Your body and emotions often signal the season before your mind does.
- What does wise counsel see? Ask a pastor, mentor or trusted friend what season they see you in.
Seasons Change, God Doesn't
Family, no season lasts forever. If you are in winter, spring is coming. If you are in harvest, prepare wisely for what's next. Through every season, the same God who "hath made every thing beautiful in his time" (Ecclesiastes 3:11) is with you.
